Who Are We
What started out in 2005 as a friendly backyard competition amongst friends to see who made the best ribs has turned into a hand full of road trips to test our skills against the best BBQ teams in the south and a second business to make some money. Originally dreamed up by Greg Lloyd (Lazy), Jeff Corbran (Jazz) & Chuck Crouse (Crazy Kraut) has now grown to include other BBQ enthusiast Boyz, Dan, Nate, Greg & Frank to name a few.
"Award winning" started with a few backyard division trophies and has now included a couple professional division walks to the stage, that even included some cash winnings. We primarily compete in events sanctioned by the Florida BBQ Association (FBA). FBA events are held in Florida, Georgia and Alabama and follow a style similar to the Kansas City BBQ Society (KCBS) with slight variations, most notably FBA events do not allow any garnish in the turn in box. Turn in times for FBA events are Saturday; 11am chicken, 12pm pork ribs, 1pm pork shoulder, & 2pm beef brisket (KCBS istarts at noon with turn ins every half hour). We arrive on Friday for meat inspection after which we can prep our meat (trim & inject).
In June 2011, we competed in our first KCBS event in Tryon, NC at the Blue Ridge BBQ & Music Festival and came home with a 3rd place in whole hog, a 9th in ribs, 9th in pork, and a 9th place overall out 85 teams. In 2012 Mulberry we won our first pro event in Brisket (out of 37 teams). We've had multiple calls to the stage in six of the last eight events with four in Pork.
Through October 2012 we have competed in 4 backyard division events and 18 professional events with 22 professional top tens & five overall top tens. We've also taken home a 1st place in spiciest wing (April 2011 Evie's in Sarasota). In 2011 we qualified for the FBA Triple Crown invitational in Perry, FL. and placed 10th in Brisket. The invitational is for the top 15 teams from Florida, Georgia & Alabama who compete in three qualifying events in their state.
In March 2012 we did our second KCBS event, the Ocala, FL. local qualifier for the Sams Club BBQ Tour Championships. While we finished 10th overall (6th in Pork and 8th in Brisket) only the top six qualified to move on to regionals.
Yes, we will cater your event. Whole Hog or just some good BBQ. Our largest event has been an annual client and friend BBQ for Kingery & Crouse, P.A. CPA's at a University of South Florida Bulls football game each of the last three seasons. We have fed between 150-200 people a selection of all four of the competition meats (chicken, ribs, pork & brisket) along with collard greens, baked beans, cole slaw, Portobelo mushrooms & cobbler.
